Statistical Inference for Multi-dimensional Poverty Measures |
| Abstract |
While the twin problems of identifying and measuring poverty in a single dimension have received extensive attention in the literature for the past several decades, these problems have been severely neglected for the case of multi-dimensional poverty. Although several measures of multi-dimensional poverty have recently been proposed, methods of inference for these measures have not yet been considered. This paper explores some of the main issues in developing such methods, using both parametric and nonparametric techniques. Close attention is paid to the issue of dependence between poverty in the different dimensions under consideration (e.g., income and health). Understanding this dependence is important not only for making inferences about multi-dimensional poverty, but also for developing a more general understanding of the link between poverty in different dimensions. By understanding this link, it is hoped that policies aimed at alleviating poverty can be more suitably tailored. |
