The Economics of Child Trafficking: Evidence from India |
| Abstract |
A theoretical model is used to highlight key economic characteristics of the trafficking of children. In particular, we show that the fight against child trafficking is far from trivial and that supply-side policies have very limited effect unless preceded by attacks on the demand side. Empirical evidence from India is presented to test this finding. We show that the supply-side policy implemented in India in the 90s that cost $31M in 2005 was only effective when international demand-side policies punishing the use of trafficked children were implemented beforehand. Successful policies involve international cooperation on both fronts. |
