The CEA Meetings
Planning is in full swing for the 2000 CEA Meetings at UBC. Go to the
CEA web site at: economics.ca
for complete information. The
forms are available to submit a paper and to register and to arrange
housing. We hope to see many of you there in 2000.
The 1999 CEA Meetings were a financial success. Final data is
available and the CEA had a small surplus of slightly over $4
thousand. The surplus will be used to improve the Meetings over the
next two years.
In 2001, the CEA will meet at McGill. Further information will be made
available as plans develop.
1999 CWEN/RFÉ Activities
Thanks to the efforts of Roberta Robb and Shelley Phipps especially,
CWEN/RFÉ has established a solid presence at the CEA annual
meetings. At the 1999 CEA conference in Toronto, CWEN/RFÉ
sponsored three successful sessions. (1) The Economics of Coercion and
Gender; (2) The Well Being of Women; (3) History and Gender. The
CWEN/RFÉ luncheon was well attended and Dr. KimMarie McGoldrick's
luncheon address on Feminist Pedagogy was as dynamic as it was
stimulating.
In addition to our Canadian presence, CWEN/RFÉ is well connected
internationally. Frances Woolley (Carleton; CWEN/RFÉ's IAFFE link)
was coordinator of the 1999 International Association for Feminist
Economics (IAFFE) conference held in Ottawa this past June.
CWEN/RFÉ Executive 1999/2000:
| President: | Brenda Spotton Visano (York) |
| Past President: | Roberta Robb (Brock) |
| Vice President: | Cristina Echevarria (Saskatchewan) |
| Secretary/Treasurer: | Linda Welling (Victoria) |
| IAFFE link: | Frances Woolley (Carleton) |
| Member at Large: | Lori Curtis (Dalhousie) |
CWEN/RFÉ @ CEA2000 Meetings
Planned sessions for the upcoming CEA meetings in Vancouver include:
- A session on Family; Organizer: Linda Welling (UVic)
- A graduate student session on Poverty; Workforce Equity; Socio-Economic Inequality; Organizer: Cristina Echevarria (Saskatchewan)
The CWEN/RFÉ Luncheon is scheduled for Friday June 2nd. The
luncheon speaker will be Dr. Nancy Folbre (UMass-Amherst). Dr. Folbre
has published extensively-including a recent book on "The War on the
Poor: A Defense Manual"-and is currently working on a book titled
"Self-Love, the Mainspring: A Feminist Critique of Political Economy."
Tickets are $24 each. Check the CEA program for final details. (We
are currently seeking external funding to assist with the expense. If
successful, we will waive the ticket price, in whole or in part, for
our junior members.)
1999/2000 Survey of the Status of Women Economists in Canada In terms
of new activities, CWEN/RFÉ has initiated a project, joint with the
CEA, aimed at identifying and assessing the status of women economists
in Canada.
To assess this status, we need information about the gender
proportions in both the relevant employment sectors and the available
workforce. A special committee* has been struck to design and conduct
surveys that will request information about such things as the gender
proportions of university economics faculty and graduate students and
sample career profiles. The information obtained from this exercise,
combined with other data currently available, will yield a fuller
understanding of the status of women in economics in Canada.
We need your cooperation in supplying the information and appreciate
every effort. We anticipate providing the respective memberships with
a final report no later than December of 2000.
*The special committee is comprised of the following members: Martin Dooley (McMaster); Nicole Fortin (UBC); Nancy Gallini (Toronto); Frances Woolley (Carleton); and Brenda Spotton Visano (York).
CWEN/RFÉ and the CEA
CWEN/RFÉ initiated talks this year with the officers of the CEA
Executive exploring the ways in which CWEN/RFÉ could be recognised
formally by the CEA. Unlike the American Economics Association, the
UK Royal Economic Society, and many other academic associations in
Canada, the CEA has no official women's caucus. In addition to a
motion proposing a formal institutional link be created by designating
a CWEN/RFÉ seat on the CEA Executive Council, CWEN/RFÉ sought
the adoption by the CEA of a statement of principle on fair
representation of women on the CEA Executive Council, the editorial
boards of its two journals, and the CEA program. Although both these
motions were defeated, the CEA Executive did vote to officially
acknowledge CWEN/RFÉ and agree to assign to one of its existing
executive members the responsibility of acting as the liaison between
the two independent organisations.
