General Tourist Information:

In 2017, Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary.  In honour of the occasion, there will be free admission to all of Canada’s national parks and historic sites, including Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Halifax Citadel, and Fort Louisberg (click here to obtain your free Parks Canada Discovery Pass).

Suggested Day Trips from Antigonish

Halifax Highlights:

  • Harbour Front Walk - buskers, sight-seeing cruises/whale watching cruises/city tours, crafts, restaurants, Cows Ice Cream
  • Spring Garden Road : shopping, restaurants, pubs, cinema (in Park Lane Mall)
  • Farmers' Market (Lower Water St between Bishop and Salter St) Saturday Mornings
  • Public Gardens - Formal Victorian Gardens (Spring Garden and South Park St)
  • Theatre - Neptune Theatre (Argyle St at Sackville St)
  • Running - extensive trails and ocean views in Point Pleasant Park (drastically thinned by Hurricane Juan in 2003) Go south on South Park St. (which becomes Young Ave).
  • Museums etc
  • The Citadel: National Historic Site - 19th C star-shaped fort
  • Maritime Museum of the Atlantic Ð exhibits on Halifax Explosion, Titanic
  • Others: Pier 21 (Ellis Island of Canada), NS Art Gallery

Lunenburg/Mahone Bay

  • picturesque/historic towns with art/craft shops
  • 1-1.5 hrs down the "South Shore" on Highway 103
  • Lunenburg-Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic/home of BlueNose II schooner

Peggy's Cove

  • iconic lighthouse and granite shore
  • 45 minutes on Highway 333
  • return by continuing on Highway 333 along St Margarets Bay and back on the 103

Annapolis Valley

  • pastoral valley with picturesque/historic towns
  • Wolfville/Grand Pre 1.5 hrs on Highway 101
  • Grand Pre - National Historic Site commemorating expulsion of Acadians
  • Annapolis Royal 2.5 hours on Highway 101
  • Port Royal - National Historic Site - First European Settlement north of Florida - Recreated early 17th C fort

Eastern Shore Beaches

  • Rainbow Haven - 30 minutes on Highway 207 and Bissett Rd - Sand and cobble beach
  • Lawrencetown - 40 minutes on Highway 207 - Sand and cobble beach - good surf (bad riptides)
  • Martinique 1 hr on Highways 107 and 7, turn at Musquodoboit Harbour 5km of white sand beach
